In early March, researchers from Natural History Museum of Crete and Hellenic Center of Marine Researchg visited Gavdos as part of the LIFE MareNatura project to collect biological samples from European Shags (Gulosus aristotelis). During their mission, they located the species’ nests on the island and successfully captured an adult bird, tagging it with a GPS transmitter.
They also conducted a two-day radar survey—an initiative within the program—tracking seabird movements between Gavdos and Gavdopoula during the evening hours. In a few weeks, the team will return to the island to radio-tag the chicks just before they fledge. The data gathered will offer valuable insights, as this region marks the southernmost edge of the species’ distribution in Greece.
