Systematic aerial surveys of marine mammals have started for the LIFE MareNatura project. The use of aircraft offers the advantage of rapid scanning of large areas, giving scientists in a short period of time an overall picture of the distribution of these animals in the area. The aerial surveys are carried out in parallel with the visual and audio surveys carried out by vessels and the combination of all the data is expected to give a clearer picture of the status of marine mammal populations in the country and the possibility of more effective conservation. MOm, using a Cessna 172 Skyhawk light aircraft, has undertaken systematic scanning of areas of the Aegean Sea, the Gulf of Corinth and coastal areas of the Ionian Sea. Recordings have already been made in the North Aegean, the Gulf of Corinth and the Icarian Sea (video).
